Programs Tailor Made for All Needs

Beginner Program
For the beginning percussionist, all you need to get started is a practice pad, "concert" drum sticks, stick bag, journal or notebook for assignments, an inexpensive metronome that subdivides and get ready to drum! The John Gurke Percussion Studio uses the Wessel's Methodology, so you will need "A Fresh Approach to the Snare Drum" and "A Fresh Approach to Mallet Percussion" by Mark Wessels. All above items may be purchased at your local music retailer.
Please consult your band director about which percussion kit is on your districts perferred instrument list.

School Band Program
Throughout your band experience, I will consult with students and parents alike on mallet/stick selection, methodology/books, technique, semester performances and preparation for all events such as all region auditions, all state auditions, drum line auditions, wind ensemble auditions, GDYO auditions, solo and emsemble competitions, drum line and winter drum line competitions and fall/spring performances.
In addition to the above mentioned, I will gauge and monitor every students' progress and ability, whie encouraging and motivating them throughout
their entire band experience and remembering why we chose to drum in the first place...it's fun!

Drum Set

For the student that is not in the school band program, but maintains an interest in studying drum set, I offer extensive drum set pedagogy. My studio has two drum sets arranged for the student and for the instructor. This creates an atmosphere condusive for an ease of communicating ideas and musical concepts. At the John Gurke Percussion Studio, you will learn the art of drum set performance and have the ability to translate those ideas in a live situation.
In order for the lessons to be productive, students must own their own drumset. Student may select any number of "drum set" sticks for lessons. Methodology and books will be determined per students' ability.
In addition to private and classroom study, I am available for recording, live performance, clinics, adjudicating, master classes, drill writing, percussion composing/arranging your half time performance, assisting/directing your percussion section/drum line/front ensemble, etc.
Drum tracks are recorded through Pro Tools and sent via email through stereo interleaved .wav or .aiff files. I will also record in your studio by appointment.
